Alaska, a state of immensity and curiosity.

A land of incredible scenery and a ruggedness that captivates all kinds of travelers. From the monumental Denali National Park to the whimsical aurora borealis (Northern Lights), there is something here for everyone.

Many of us have heard of Alaska but maybe know little about it.

I’ve always wanted to visit. From San Francisco, it’s approximately a 7.5-hour plane ride. In a effort to inspire myself — and you — to one day make a trip to Alaska, here are some interesting facts that maybe you didn’t know about it.

Alaska has an interesting history

Some interesting facts are that the United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million. It didn’t officially reach statehood until 1959. Prior to becoming the 49th state, it was called the Territory of Alaska. Thousands of years prior to colonization, numerous vibrant indigenous cultures lived throughout the land.

The five prominent indigenous communities in Alaska are the Northern Eskimos (Inupiat), Southern Eskimos (Yuit), Aleuts, Interior Indians (Athabascans) and Southeast Coastal Indians (Tlingit and Haida).
